Had a little sleep I after such a late one last night and started our drive to antelope canyon. The weather was pretty horrendous - huge storms with lightning striking the red mountains either side of us. Quite a lot of rain as well, so was very disappointed when we got there to discover all tours of the canyon for the rest of the day were cancelled! I was really upset as it was something I was really looking forward to. We filled up with petrol and put air in the tyres as we tried to figure out what to do. I made some calls and got onto the wifi at McDonald's and eventually was able to squeeze us into one tomorrow afternoon - we will just have to backtrack on ourselves by 2.5hrs.
Set off toward the south rim of the Grand Canyon and stopped at horseshoe bend which is probably one of the most famous pictures of the canyon. It was very impressive and very scary - you stand right on the edge with no railings or anything! Very, very beautiful - and the 15 mins that we were there taking pictures of it (it was sunny by this point) I got all burnt on my back!
Made a stop at a view point just before the national park entrance to a smaller side part of the canyon which was very deep. Eventually got to the canyon at 4 (which felt like 5 to us as we had put our clocks back) and stopped at the desert view point to get our first glimpse. And it sure it was bloody grand. I certainly wasn't expecting it to be quite as big as it is, which is bloody enormous. It was almost too big - like to big to comprehend. It stretched so far it didn't look real. Drove on further, parked and walked to the shuttle, getting rather wet in the process (was raining again). Ended up walking to the first view point as the queue was way too long and then to the next one and then the next one. Was a nice easy walk, right along the rim so amazing views the whole way.
Almost made it to sunset but we're so exhausted - we would do it the following night. Got to our campsite and made dinner really late - about 8.45/9 which felt like 9.45/10 !
