Munich and Dachau

Got up and had the buffet brekky downstairs. Went off on our Dachau tour with another Irish tour guide. Went through the gates which read 'work will set you free' in German. The guide was really good and so well educated in it, he really got into the politics ad the drive and the reason why it all happened. I knew quite a bit about it already, but he told us so much more. Went into the building where they would be stripped of their clothes and documents, saw the different rooms in which they would torture people. There was one replica of the dorms they used to stay in, separated into the living conditions as the camp progressed - 50 in a room at the start and 500 in a room at the end.

The worst part by far was the crematorium and gas chamber. The guide told us that each time they were moved to a different camp they would be completely shaved and showered (to prevent infection), this would happen so often that they would never know which time it would be a gas chamber not a shower. Trickery and lies. I really didn't want to go in the gas chamber it was just so awful so I went in and then ran out the other side (something they would never have been able to do). It was so interesting but so so sick and disturbing - other rooms had hooks where they would hang them from and walls with drains for blood near them from when they would shoot them. Horrible horrible stuff, but very good to know. The main statue of the survivors monument read 'to honour the dead and warn the living'.

Went back and dropped our stuff - ended up having a nap as I waited for Edward to get off the computer. We went for a quick shopping walk - trying to find a nice big carry on suitcase for me as I've got too much stuff! Didn't find one - they were all so expensive so will look for one in London. Edward bought a few souvenirs too.

Met up with busabout people for dinner - Kirsty and Lewis plus Mickey and Sian, both from Australia who we had met briefly in lauterbrunnen and had just arrived in Munich. We went to the Augustiner for beers and food - I enjoyed my radler more this time (probably because I got a smaller glass to it was less intimidating!). After that we went to the market beer gardens and had another. Then back to the hostel bar where Lewis very kindly bought us shots of this yummy strawberry purée vodka. Had a few sex on the beach cocktails too. Kept saying 'ok go up and pack after this one' but we were just having too much fun. Eventually said goodbye to everyone and went up to drunkenly pack and shower - ended up getting into bed at 3. Well worth it though, a great last day in Europe, and tomorrow - England!!
